Squire Cigars originated in February 1974 as The Pipe Squire in Santa Rosa, CA. The first location was at the Belvedere on Mendocino for eight months, then they moved to Old Courthouse Square, downtown. After two years Barney and Linda Squires took the big jump and opened a shop in Coddingtown Center. They operated for eight years across from the old Emporium before moving into the newly enclosed center mall. They were in business at this location for 16 more years. In 2000 they moved the store to their current location at 1305 Cleveland Avenue which afforded them room enough for a lounge and retail operation.
Squire Cigars is in its 14th year at Vineyard Square, home of D’Argenzio Winery, Sheldon and Krutz wineries, The Barbery, a traditional barbershop, and Fog Belt Brewing Company. The center is now a mecca for rest and relaxation.
Squire Cigars celebrated its 40th anniversary in February, 2014. Begun as a very small business in a 300 foot space, they have grown to be one of the most recognized shops in the industry. Barney spent 25 years as a sales representative for Davidoff and prior to that, other major manufacturers. Bringing insight and information from other stores and locales, Barney contributed to the growth and direction of the store. Linda has served on the major industry boards of directors and as President of the Tobacconists’ Association of America from 1989 – 1991 and as President of the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America from 2003 – 2005. Since stepping down from the board, her energies have been devoted to the store and growing their business and their off-premise accounts.
Experienced in the industry, Linda has toured the Camacho factory and tobacco fields in Danli, Honduras, the Tabacalera Garcia factory in La Romana, Dominican Republic (Altadis, USA), and on the other side of the island in Santo Domingo, D.R. toured the factories of General Cigar Co., Davidoff of Geneva, Arturo Fuente, MATASA (Fonseca), La Aurora, among others. In Connecticut, she toured the New Haven F.D. Grave Factory and the tobacco fields and barns of General Cigar Co. outside Hartford.
Squire Cigars has a long history of good customer service, industry knowledge and a general love of the art of cigar making and the enjoyment it brings.
